When asked what to wear for an engagement session, I typically recommend that clients wear clothes that make them feel fabulous- something that is “them” but maybe stepped up a notch. If you’re a jeans and t-shirt kind of person, maybe you wear your fanciest jeans, some heels and great little jacket with some fun jewelry. If otherwise, you always have the option of getting some designer wedding gowns that would never fail to liven up your wedding day. While you want to feel comfortable and look like yourself, you also want to dress up a bit since it’s not too often (for most people) that you have professional photos taken of yourself. But sometimes, a client will mention they have a red gown they have but never get to wear, and sometimes I can talk them into wearing that red gown for their session. Those rare occasions are pretty magical and result in photos like these…
I also want to note that I’m so thankful for Reba and Brent for trusting my vision for this session. Reba was a little hesitant about the dress, but after a little convincing she totally rocked it. Also, we were originally supposed to do the session in a different part of Griffith Park, but when I arrived to the location, I kind of had the desire for something different. So, I called an audible that we drive up the hill a bit for a different scene and neither Reba or Brent batted an eye. Sometimes I have some crazy ideas while I’m shooting and having clients that trust that crazy look in my eye when I get an idea is such a great feeling.
Moral of the story: don’t be afraid to dress a up a little (or a lot) for your engagement or portrait session. It’s fun, and it’s inspiring for me in a totally different way. Also, if I come up with a crazy idea like totally changing the location of the shoot the day of the shoot, trust me. Those crazy ideas can lead to me producing my favorite images. Sometimes they don’t work. At all. But sometimes they are awesome so it’s worth that risk. 😉

Then, after a quick change, we headed back down the hill for a few more in their more normal attire. It’s awesome to be able to shoot two very different looks in a session so you can use the images in different ways.
